I just got home from seeing this movie. There is a kernel of truth in music school politics and the pecking order of drummers and jazz festival competitions. The reality message I got was that when Lenny White told me to play what I want to play and to be true to my art and myself--- when I was 19 and still wanting to be great like him, and Billy Cobham, and Jack DeJohnette, and ..., on and on... And I was making a living in a working band with incredible players, but our main purpose was to draw a drinking bar crowd. Lenny was right. And Chick. And Joe Farrell. And John Von Ohlen. Peter Erskine. So, what am I waiting for? Well, Im not waiting. And I havent been idle. I play with some great players. My take-away on this movie is that it kicked my ass to play at the highest level--artistically--EVERY TIME I PLAY. and Im not done getting better or having my own ideas, and giving the energy to every artist I play with to present their voice at their highest level. Every time. Ill keep you in the loop when I play next. Lotsa music coming up this month. Ill try to not get hit by a bus.
