I just got the following message from the Straphangers Network. I thought I would help spread the news: Dear rider - Subways and buses just got more affordable for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. This week, the New York City Council unanimously passed legislation that requires businesses of 20 or more to allow their employees to take advantage of a federal tax break. Under this program workers can have what they spend on transit excluded from their income taxes. The result: When enacted, the law has the potential to save every day riders hundreds of dollars a year. Its automatic, with no itemization needed. This victory would not have been possible without the leadership of prime sponsor Council Member Dan Garodnick and our colleagues at The Riders Alliance. You can read more about the bill in Pete Donohues column in the Daily News and at mta.info/mta/farebenefits.htm. Sincerely, Gene, Cate and Jason
