I just had a great weekend working in the Denver area with my daughter gathering signatures for an initiative that gives people and property owners a smidge more protection from the relentless gas and oil industry in Colorado. Initiative 88 will hopefully be on the ballot in November and if it passes, it will keep new oil and gas drilling at least 2000 feet away from buildings that house people. Those buildings can be homes, schools, hospitals and businesses. Spills are inevitable. We had almost 500 last year alone. With this in place, the ground spills will be kept about a third of a mile away from the playground where your kids are having recess, or where your grandparents are finishing out their lives, or where your home is--how about those property values? One guy in the industry of gas or oil said this would be prohibitive and cost the industry too much money. But they rake in billions and would rather pay lawyers to fight you if your family and land gets poisoned, rather than respecting your right to tell them to keep a safe distance away. Power to the people, corporatocracy needs to be reined in.
