I just had a sad experience with a woman whom I admire very much. She has been thru hell and back. In her process of recovery she found religion and is now a Born-Again-Christian. She and I have similar beliefs but different ways of viewing the world and expressing ourselves. I value her friendship and respect her right to express herself in the way that makes sense for her life. While we differ on many specific social views we are both women committed to living life with love and respect. This morning she left a group that we both belong to because she believes that another of our friends is a bad parent and does not live a Godly life because he took his daughters to see a Miley Cyrus concert. I am not interested in debating the pros and cons of attending a Miley Cyrus concert but I am disappointed that instead of sharing her thoughts with him/us responsibly she chose rather to hurl some pretty choice words including racial epitaphs, degrading name-calling and accusations that seem to lack the compassion, humility and live and let live attitude defined by life in recovery not to mention, Christianity. I feel sad to have been witness to such an extraordinary woman use the Bible as a weapon for defense of irresponsible behavior. I feel sad that I was once again reminded why it has been so confusing for me throughout my life to be hear people who proclaim to live a life according to the teachings of Christ demand that others be accepting and tolerant of their religious beliefs while they dont demonstrate the same for those who walk a different path. This kind of behavior doesnt serve as an example to open hearts and minds. In this case it literally stopped the exchange of ideas and points of view and probably ended a friendship. At the very least it is disappointing and sad. In my humble opinion it doesnt matter what you say, its what you do that determines who you are. In this case watching in person how an amazing person could allow fear and rage to triumph over love and humility was very unsettling. And though her words are that she lives everyday in the light of Christ this morning was dark for everyone in her path. My heart aches for her and for the doors she shut. #liveandletlive #doontoothers #judgenotlestyebe #openheart #openmind #love #soloporhoy
