I just had a sort of bonding experience at Publix with the other stupid people there at 5:30 on Christmas Eve. It wasnt mobbed, but there were a fair number of last minute shoppers looking for the three or four things they forgot, or the pre-prepared versions of the stuff they meant to make, but didnt. The woman in front of me had a box of stuffing and two slice-em-and-bake-em cookie packages. No one was lingering to choose the best grapefruit, and the employees were polite but not chatty -- everyone was all business. In and out. A man with a crumpled list let out an exasperated cry and shouted (really), A gallon of chocolate ice cream? Its cold out! Another man was stopped dead at the end of an aisle, looking dazed. I quietly said, Excuse me and he snapped out of it. He started apologizing. Dont worry, I said. Really, none of us should be here right now. A woman passing by with two kids in her cart said, You got THAT right. All three of us started to laugh and then kept laughing. Made my day.
