I just had a very interesting experience... Having just closed morning practice by the Chiang Mai Gate in the morning sun, amidst the remnant detritus of the flower festival of this weekend, I was approached by a young man Shun Liaou, a photographer from Colorado. He told me that he has been taking pictures and collecting stories of people around Asia as a project and invited me for a coffee to chat. His first question was to ask what I had been practicing. After a short explanation (Im an amateur practitioner, but did my best) he told me that he was very glad we had spoken about it because his Grandfather had practiced Tai Chi everyday and in all of his life he had never asked what it was that he was doing. I could see a recognition there in his eyes, it meant a lot to him. We had a lovely conversation about life, about our respective stories, and about his project A Shared Humanity , which is a photography project in which Shun takes pictures and collects stories of people he meets along the way. I noticed the name of his project contrast one question he asked me, What will be your legacy? We agreed after a long chat that individual legacies are a thing of the past. That a shared humanity implies a collective legacy that answers to the collective situation in which we face the imperative need of a transformation from the hero narrative to a collective approach, a shared response, to the crises of our time. Shun: It was a pleasure to meet you, and I hope that your path crosses with many people with stories to share in this light. Heres to A Shared Humanity :)
