I just had to have a talk with my sons about the difference - TopicsExpress

I just had to have a talk with my sons about the difference between online games and reality. In a story I read on CNN, two twelve year old girls wanted to prove their devotion to a scary online character called Slenderman. They did this by stabbing a girl NINETEEN times in an effort to kill her. Thankfully the girl survived. My kids mashaAllah have a good balance in life and they play online games and read and play outside. Theyve never shown any aggression due to games and I dont let them play Mature games or others I feel are inappropriate, but even on benign websites you can find problematic themes. It is our job as parents to monitor EVERYTHING they do online. My family computer is in my living room so the kids have no privacy with it. I check history and I watch over their shoulders from time to time. And I talk to them. Today I reminded them that they are to behave always in a proper manner, and that if they hear about a classmate who is very angry or who has a list of people he would want to get rid of, or if someone is aggressive or talks about killing or hurting others, they are to talk to a teacher or counselor, me of course, or whoever can deal with the situation. Gone are the days when we could allow our children to be innocent. I also told them that they should be the kind one who reaches out to a marginalized child - someone new to school, new to the neighborhood, or someone who is a bit awkward or seems to not easily fit it. Their kind word and actions can change a life and avert a tragedy later on. cnn/2014/06/03/justice/wisconsin-girl-stabbed/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
