I just had to unfriend a couple of acquaintances because their statuses of late have been about placing all our race relation ills at the foot of all white people. Look. I was sheltered as a child by an over-protective conservative Latino father (yep he was Republican until Reagan and then they showed them their colors and direction and he bolted because he knew better) who thought raising me to be American first, Latina second was so that I could succeed. I grew up in an a black neighborhood but was called white girl all the way up until I went to High School. There I met people from every part of NY. Brooklyn Tech was MY United Nations. I know I havent experienced racism the way many others have but I will not fault people as a group for what is happening in the world today. I see too many people, regardless of race, being hurt today and Im not going to pick and choose who is better or worse off simply because of history. History is meant to teach us not to bind us to it. Certainly not to have some sick permission to treat others differently when all I can simply do is make choices based on the actions of the individual. So, black, white, red, orange, gay, straight, thick, thin, tall or short - know that what will compel me to be or act a certain way is behaviors and actions, not where you came from or what you look like. You wanna live your life that far into Pandoras box thats on you. I have friends. Friends from everywhere and every walk of life. Oh I have silly ones, stoopid ones, brilliant ones, exasperating ones but I will not describe them any other way. Just friends. Ok, off my soapbox.
