I just heard someone sharing information on a law that was recently passed in Austin, Texas that removes gender-specificity from public restroom facilities. You may have heard this, also. I just wanted to stand up for correct reporting and let you all know that the law does not apply to locker rooms, multi-stall public restrooms, or just any and all public restroom facilities as was stated. The law applies only to single-occupancy restrooms, and it will only change the signing on those restrooms. Think of the restrooms in the back of a Starbucks - those two gloriously huge single-toilet rooms, one with a label for men, the other with a label for women, otherwise fairly identical single-toilet rooms. I know I have waited for upwards of 15 minutes for the womens restroom to open up at Starbucks, and faced the social pressure of wanting to just use the unoccupied mens room and weighing how much I want to put up with possible judgment for doing so. All that the new Austin law accomplishes is a removal of the gender-specific signage on these single-occupancy restrooms, much like the long-existing family restrooms available in some public spaces. Locker rooms and multi-occupancy restrooms are still separate. That is all.
