I just learned that Attorney General Coakley has filed a federal brief on behalf of the Commonwealth in support of Mississippis lawsuit against FEMA to block the new flood rates, claiming they are arbitrary and unlawful. This is something I asked for months ago. I thank the AG for her actions in joining us to help protect families and businesses from these devestating increases. Supporting the lawsuit is just the latest of several measures we have taken to try to delay and fix the flawed law and maps. In addition to supporting the federal lawsuit, the pressure weve put on our Congressional delegation led to a new bill to delay and fix many of the flawed aspects of Biggert-Waters. Congressman Lynch joined me last week at a public forum in Hingham to discuss that delay. In addition, the AG, Speaker, myself and several other state legislators co-sponsored state legislation to cap the amount of flood insurance mortgage lenders may require of homeowners. I already know of one case where a premium was lowered based on this legislation, saving my constituent $6,000. And of course we have the incredible efforts being made by town and civic leaders in appleaing the flood maps. While this is all positive news, we must keep fighting to ensure familes and buisnesses are protected from the devestating impact of the new flood insurance rates.
