I just learned that Poet/Author/Activist Dr. Maya Angelou has died at the age of 86. She was found unresponsive in her home in North Carolina. Dr. Angelou has written many successful books including her best-selling classic I Know Why Caged Bird Sings which was made into a movie and starred Diahann Carroll and the late Esther Rolle, who along with Alfie Woodard, Wesley Snipes and Anne-Marie Johnson would later star in Dr. Angelous 1998 film Down In The Delta which she directed. Dr, Angelou was involved with the Civil Rights movement marching along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and she has won many awards and honors for her poems and activism, She wrote a poem when President Bill Clinton was elected into office and she also wrote a poem for Michael Jackson which was recited by Rapper/Singer Queen Latifah. She even recorded an album with Ashford & Simpson called Been Found which was released in 1996. Dr, Angelou was also a college professor at Wake-Forrest University in Winston-North Carolina. Dr. Angelou also appeared in the # 1 hit film Poetic Justice which Janet Jackson, 2Pac Shakur, Regina King and Joe Torrey. She also wrote the poetry for the film and in 1997, she presented Miss Janet with the Lena Horne Achievement award at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards as well as appearing on the hit series Moesha. Dr. Angelou has inspired many singers, rappers, poets and authors including Janet Jackson, Queen Latifah, Brandy, Ashford & Simpson, Oprah Winfrey, 2 Pac, John Singleton and countless others. She was and is an international treasure who overcame a-lot of obstacles to become one the worlds most loved, admired and respected ladies.
