I just looked through a telescope for the first time in my life. I saw Saturn -- how frigging amazing; I could see the rings (or their outline, anyway). It steadily kept moving off to the right, which sort of perplexed me at first, because Im thinking that stars — our perception of them, anyway — dont actually move at a clip thats noticeable to the naked eye. But then it was explained to me that the earths spin creates that impression, and in that sense, it truly is sailing that fast through the night sky. Some of you are perhaps chuckling at my childlike amazement over this, but I was blown away (I almost said star struck, but I would need to be punched for that). As beautiful and amazing as it was to see, it also reminds me that our insignificance in the cosmos is utterly incomprehensible.
