I just love this post so much. As many of you who know me personally know, I am a big advocate for those who prepare to birth naturally, simply because of the lack of support in general. Its very hard to go against the grain and convince yourself that you can do something that our culture tells you that you cant or shouldnt attempt doing. And as someone who has had a drug-free birth, I TOTALLY get why women get epidurals or other interventions. (And I am completely supportive of whatever way each friend, family member, colleague or client chooses to birth! I just hear the question WHY?!?! when it comes to my personal choice so often that Im choosing to share one reason here, which I feel has proved especially true for me.) The pain is all-consuming, it feels like it is destroying you, and you seem to lose control over what your body is doing. Ive equated natural birth in my own mind to a forest fire many times, and it was awesome to read this beautifully-worded post by a local Colorado childbirth educator about that comparison. One of my favorite excerpts: The lodgepole pine has what is called a serotinous cone that is filled with seeds and held together by resin. This cone can only be opened by very high temperatures, which melt the resin. These seeds are then released into the ground during a wildfire and are responsible for the start of new lodgepole pines. Pain in labor is a special type of pain. It is one that almost always does not cause any damage to the body. After a woman has worked her way through childbirth, she learns more about her own capabilities and that of her child. This knowledge can give birth to a whole new confidence in life. ninebirths/1/post/2013/11/the-wildfire-of-birth.html
