When I described the young postman’s behaviour, the senior Jamaican postal worker at the counter said — ‘I’ll have a word with him, but I think I know why that happened. We know that address is a homelessness hostel, and there were occasions in the past at that address where something valuable like a bank card had to be signed for, and someone came to the door and signed for it, but it was the wrong person who took it. So for your address, we think it is wiser to just drop the card, and then the person who wants to collect has to show us one of the forms of ID which we accept.’
