I just posted an article on how to know when to fire an employee. Now, lets change focus a bit. When should you celebrate an employee even though their best efforts might not have resulted in the desired outcome. I know that its hard to believe but, occasionally, we experience a situation, either personally or with an employee or team, when everythings been done right. Weve created a good plan, worked hard, nailed our objectives, implemented our strategy, behaved professionally and honestly, brought value to our prospect or client - and still the project, event, sale fails. What should we do? Debrief, debrief, debrief - was there anything we could have done differently? If so, lets implement the change and celebrate the fact that weve identified a better way. If not, if we feel we executed in all the right ways, lets celebrate the fact that weve elevated our company name recognition, and highlighted our work ethic and professionalism. That, too, will return in future rewards. If youre the boss - thank your team for all they did, for how hard they pushed, for giving it their all. This will motivate them to get back on deck for the next opportunity at bat. Recognition, communication, and expressions of gratitude will build a positive organizational culture.
