I just re-shared a status via Nia Wilson. She brings up a very important point, which is that when there are arrests in political movement, the legal funds to cover these come up quickly, however there is rarely (if ever) much support or funds for people arrested outside of these political moments. There is rarely (if ever) funds for black and brown dealing with poverty. There is rarely (if ever) support for black and brown sitting in jail because of criminal charges not tied to political action. And the thing is that these crimes done by our people, are definitely tied to a political framework, yet we dont see it that way, and by we, I mean even the families of those arrested. We cant see it that way because there are not avenues from political organizations to talk about in that way, there are no avenues for community to talk about it in that way. Let us be vigilant in making sure this movement continues forward without becoming institutionalized and absorbed by whiteness and the political-nonpolitical false binary. We started with collecting funds for court costs, lets attempt to move to collecting funds to get everyone out that needs it, or collecting the resources to make it a reality without even needing the funds (think creatively). We had a community meeting to communicate regarding the latest march, and I brought up in my break-out group that I (a non-black POC) am currently heavily involved in managing the current funds for the legal fundraising, and that the person attached to the fundraising is a white person, and so at this very moment the people that are not directly affected by the oppression we are trying to fight against are not the ones directly involved with the management of these funds. Something I brought up is that we need to be intentional about being accountable to the black communities that we are trying to support, so I will be mentioning it here for transparency, that I am committed and working in moving this responsibility away from my hands into black hands, and only be involved in any managerial tasks as long as I have been given consent to do so by black voices, and if I continue to handle it, it will be because these black voices and black hands are busy and are asking me to deal with it for now cause they gotta do other shit that is more important, or whatever other reason. Lets be intentional about this!!
