I just read a post that made a reasonable suggestion to parents. This suggestion was to have the less expensive gifts (mittens/gloves/socks/etc.) represent their gifts from Santa... while the more expensive ones should be directly from the parents. Their reasoning for this, was so less fortunate parents would not have to explain Santa and his discrimination to their children. I think the underlying issue here, is the one being exploited. Tell your children the REAL story of Saint Nicholas, or which ever factually similar story you wish. This way, your children dont confuse charity with entitlement. How can we ever expect future generations to embrace the blessings of reality, when their most anticipated gifts come once a year from a source of fantasy? The story of Santa is a wonderful one... with many historical examples of real people delivering unprompted gifts during the time of year that often yields the greatest hardships for the less fortunate. It doesnt need to be tainted with chimney sliding, flying deer, mystical deliveries, or lists of good/bad children. If you need these things to have your children behave, then the problems are bigger than the lies youre telling.
