I just read the article 11 things you shouldnt say to a parent of a child with autism (and 11 things you should. Although the suggestions were helpful, the intro blurb stated that the featured child Jake, recovered from his autism. Autism is a life long developmental condition, lifelong meaning people do not recover. Sure people cope, we are coping with our sons autism, but unlike TB, cancer people do not recover. Statement like these confuse people who do not have a connection with autism because they think it is temporary or a state of mind. 1 in 100 have autism in the UK, and that is just those diagnosed. I dont think they would agree with or appreciate the term recovered, much like I do not.
