I just read this article about James May, founder of Sweetleaf stevia and was blown away by all he went through to bring stevia to this country. SweetLeaf™ has always been one of my favorite stevias because the powder version has a prebiotic in it. His story of mystery, triumph and fighting big government makes him a hero in my books. When he first attempt to bring it into this country the FDA said that he couldn’t inform consumers that it tastes sweet or that it will enhance the flavor of any food or beverage. If he didn’t follow these guidelines, the FDA said that it had the right to remove all of his stevia products from the stores. He complied but he decided to name it Sweetleaf. The Secretary of Defense was promoting aspartame, at the time a product owned by G.D. Searle & Co., where he was the President and CEO and he also tried to stop the import of stevia into the country. He still triumph and the rest is history. I want to personally thank James for bringing stevia to the U.S. I use it everyday and now I feel a loyalty to this sweetener and to the man who founded the company. Thank you James. I knew there was a reason I liked this Stevia so much! First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. ~Mahatma Gandhi
