I just read where my old friend Laura Long is studying to be a nursing assistant. Nursing assistant, what a job! Its probably one of the hardest jobs in the medical field! The sad thing is people pay little attention to the nursing assistant! With that being said do you know what a nursing assistant actually does? Let me tell you! She carefully and skillfully cares for the needs of each of her patients. After she has run back and forth to the patients room 30 times for ice, sodas, blankets & bedpans she not only answers to each patients needs, she also answers to the needs of her nurse! Again, running back and forth to the patients room 30 times for this or that! While in between running back and forth for everyone, shes is this PTs room giving a bath, in that ones room putting cool cloths around ones neck to sooth her nausea, or in anothers room adjusting the air or holding her hair back as she vomits! All this she does continually and so much more throughout her shift! Giving, giving and More giving with little in return. The nursing assistant is the backbone of nursing! Without her the entire system of care would falter! It is with her that nurses have an extra eye and ear to mange each PTs care, it is with her that the pt can find relief through simple listening & caring, it is with her that nurses function at their best because we have her to help us care for that pt and their broad spectrum of needs! It is the nursing assistant that none of us, NOT the patient or the nurse can do without! So to every CNA out there when someone ask you what it is you do, tell them you have the most important job of them your the support, the spine, the real backbone of nursing! Thank you for ALL you do! This is just my 2 cents! You are appreciated!
