I just read where two more officers were ambushed and killed. My heart and prayers go out to their families, law enforcement and their communities. It has gotten to the point where I feel compelled to speak out. Recently the Cleveland Tx Police Chief Rex Evans wrote a great piece on his FB page: I will only quote part of it though this will still be lenghty; Recently, there have been many attacks, some fatal, some not, against Police Officers all across this Nation. We are sworn to Protect and defend those who chant We want dead cops! When? Now!! We are sworn to protect and defend those who throw their bodily waste upon us and called us killers, murderers, child killers and worse...much worse. We, as Law Enforcement Officers have no choice....we can not side with those that love us or those that hate us. We must, by definition of, our Constitution and our Oath of Office, protect and defend both, equally and fairly. Even when those around us incite and perpetuate hate as if handing out cool water on a hot summer afternoon. There have been over one dozen premeditated, armed assaults carried out against Law Enforcement Officers across this country since the Ferguson Incident. Now, to be fair, I was not in Ferguson....in fact, Ive never been there. However, I know Policing and I know when your getting beaten and someone is grabbing your side arm, wrestling it from your hands. you have two choices...let go and die, or fight with all youve got. Ive been there. I am speaking from experience, not rhetoric from some special interest leader, the internet or some types of media. There are, sadly, some Police Officers who have decided its best to hide their uniforms, badge, themselves even, from sight unless On Duty and in their marked car. Even then, there are those who are well, quite simply put, scared. I understand being scared. However, when one is scared, that is the time to fight the hardest...to stand the tallest....to walk the furthest.....to do the most, to be the most you can be, especially for those who can not. . I will not cower down. I will not be ashamed of who I am and what I do. My career has been my lifes calling from a Higher Authority for a higher purpose than of myself. Service before Self....a way of life for the few, to protect and defend the many. Even those that hate us. Yet, when those who hate us and wish us harm are in need, we are the first they call upon to save them. And, what do we do? We come to them. Help them. Protect them. Defend them. We even save them. You may hate me. You may think I am the epitome of evil. You may dwell on ways to maim or kill me. You might even do your best to kill me.... for no other reason than the badge upon my chest...well, I pity you and your warrantless hatred and racial bias towards me. I pity your lack of knowledge and understanding. I pity your lack of love for your fellow man. Most of all, I pity your ignorance. So many have given so much and yet, you fail to heed the lessons of History and only seek to perpetuate racism, hatred and bigotry. To every Cop and your family out there, from one simple Police Chief in Texas, please allow me to convey to you my utmost respect and undying, unwavering admiration for all that you and yours sacrifice daily. You are loved and you are greatly appreciated. Like I said in the beginning of my Post. My name is Rex Evans. I am cop. And, I am not afraid of you. There are to many of the innocent who seek shelter behind me and I shall not fail them or those who stand with me here upon the Line. (Rex Evans Police Chief Cleveland Texas) Sir, you have my deepest respect and my greatest admiration. I stand with you. I stand with my sheriff Greg Capers and his entire department here in San Jacinto County. It is time that citizens stand up and stand with those that put their lives on the line everyday. This absolute nonsense must stop and stop now. I will gladly fight with you and for you. Every day you put your life on the line and for that I am grateful. If war is to be declared on the valiant officers that serve in my communities, I will join with law enforcement to stand against this evil that seeks to harm them. It is time that we join together, communities and law enforcement. Many know I believe we are living in a police state. A police state that is trampling the rights of its citizenry. I still hold to that and know it to be true. But when you leave the activist realm and declare war on my community (yes, they are part of our communities) I am honor bound to stand with them, to fight with them and for them. Regardless of my differences with some particular individual or department most of these folks are good men and women. So not only do I salute you, I want you to know I support you, stand with you and am praying for you. God bless the servants in Blue and their families. My He grant you wisdom and protection in these evil days we are all living in. Terry Holcomb Sr. Citizen, husband, father, grandfather
