I just realized that Joss Whedons The Avengers movie has no Mid-Point Scene, which is a scene that generally shows up around the middle of the movie that sums up or reinstates all of the thematic elements of the movie before placing the characters neck-deep in obstacles in the last half of Act 2. (For an example of a mid-point scene, fast-forward to the exact middle of The Empire Strikes Back. Its the scene where Yoda tells Luke Skywalker to go into the cave. Other examples include the scene where Dr. Sattler and John Hammond eat ice-cream in Jurassic Park, Helen Parr talking to her kids in the cave in The Incredibles, and the Sunrise, Sunset song number in Fiddler on the Roof (film).) Sure, a lot of Japanese movies dont have mid-point scenes either. But the lack of a mid-point scene in a movie like Gojira is more of a result of the different forms of story-telling and thematic conveyance in the older Japanese culture. There are sill very heave thematic elements in that film, but they are conveyed in a way other than a mid-point scene. The lack of a mid-point scene in The Avengers, on the other hand, actually suggests that there are no underlying themes tying all of the elements of the film together. Sure, you have great moments that sum up the individual characters which are great in it of themselves, and then a little league prep-talk by Sam Jackson uniting the few characters that didnt fall off the flying ship, but theres no one underlying theme in the movie that expresses an over-all coherent thought or theme in that movie.
