Contact your Senator and encourage them to pass this bill In an effort to reinstate the ban and prohibit horses from being exported to foreign countries for slaughter, S. 541, the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, was introduced on March 12, 2013. Many argue that because horses are not raised for consumption in the U.S., medications given to horses render their meat toxic to humans. If enacted into law, this legislation would permanently ban horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. and make it a crime to export horses for slaughter. S. 541 is pending before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Should this legislation come to the floor of the Senate for a vote, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind.
