I just received this email from the Friends of Crown Beach about a hearing on Monday, November 4. If you can, please attend this hearing. Here is the info: Dear Friends of Crown Beach, John Russo, Alameda’s city manager, is holding a special meeting on Monday, November 4, 2013, 7 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue. He intends to gauge public opinion on whether to allow the East Bay Regional Park District to work longer hours to complete its beach restoration project. In order to finish the project by November 30, workers would be on the job weekdays until 9 p.m. (rather than 5 p.m.), and weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. As Friends of Crown Beach, we can show our support for the park district’s request for extended hours by attending the meeting or emailing the city manager. A few extra hours of work is a small inconvenience for a project that only happens every 26 years at our beach, which figures so prominently in Alameda’s identity. The park district is spending $5.6 million on this project, without any financial contribution from the City of Alameda, and has gone out of its way to minimize disruption and inconvenience to neighbors by delivering sand from a barge in the water rather than have heavy truck traffic through our neighborhoods. Environmental permits only allow the barge to remain in the Bay until November 30. If the City of Alameda does not permit the park district to complete the job by November 30, the beach will continue to erode. Old-timers in Alameda may remember the time when, before beach restoration, the water reached Shoreline Drive. We are asking all Friends of Crown Beach to urge the city to allow the park district to proceed with extended hours in order to complete the beach restoration. Please attend the meeting on Monday, November 4, 7 p.m. at city hall to support the park district and Crown Beach. If you are unable to attend, please email to the city manager [email protected] and tell him you want Crown Beach restored this year.
