I just removed our largest and oldest koi (about 16 years old), Yellow, who died last night. We are down to our final few. I dont see ever adding more to the pond. Theyve been a beautiful blessing; we are grateful to have had them in our midst, and we will take the best care of them as long as they last. Yellow had suffered more than any of the others--survived the mysterious poison or disease of a while back, though it took a toll on her for a while. She recuperated and resumed her healthy activity and appetite, headbutting every other fish for food. She certainly picked the right family for an appetite. She was our misfit--huge (I got her when she was just a couple inches long), off-color and devoted; the only one I ever could coax into petting a little.
