I just returned from the Bahamas (sob, sob) and here are my thoughts. Ive only traveled to one other island in the Caribbean (Turks and Caicos), but I have to say the Bahamas win. Heres why: The locals are incredibly friendly, warm, funny, talkative people who enjoy engaging with the tourists. For this reason, tourists can freely roam around Nassau etc. without feeling endangered. This was the most exciting thing for me. I dont care how beautiful and tropical a place is, if tension exists between the inhabitants and the visitors, I feel it immediately, and have no desire to take part in what appears to be a situation where my presence causes misery. So, Bahamas receives an A+ for hospitality. As a result of being part of a British colony for so long, they have an amazing selection of teas and biscuits. Some of which I havent ever seen in the US. (Pfeffernusse) They have high tea! The water is really that color. I guess Im not a huge fan of fried foods, or rum, or eating a whole fish with eyeballs in it..but thats what you run into with most tropical cuisine. A pina colada here and there is nice, but overall, I was finished with rum before I packed to head home. That being said, the grouper and lobster offerings were amazing. Parts of downtown Nassau reminded me of Charleston. Brightly colored colonial buildings, beautiful churches, well worn and beautiful streets. Overall A+. A perfect March getaway. Go if you can.
