I just saw 300: Rise of an Empire yesterday. And what a great disappointment it was. The movie had problems on so many levels. The cast led by relative unknown Sullivan Stapleton (A TV actor on the show Strike Back), playing the Athenian General Themistocles, no Gerard Butler, lacked the charisma of the Spartans of the original. The ultra-violent fight scenes were plenty and gory but at a certain point they become matter of fact and lack the heroism theyre supposed to represent. The Persians are a threat, sure, but hardly the civilization ending evil they were in the original. Xerxes is a spoilt brat who gets to the throne by the machinations of Artemisia, played brilliantly by Eva Green. Green is of course the saving grace of the whole film, playing an utterly vengeful, evil and mean naval Persian general of Greek origins. Without her, the movie would be unwatchable. Luckily, she is in nearly three quarters of the film, making up for the lack of talent of the rest of the cast. It has to be mentioned that Rise is not a sequel per se, since the events are happening in concert with the events of 300. This means that the Spartans play a vital role in the plot of the movie and (SPOILER ALERT) they save the day in the end. All in all, this was a waste of JD 12 (approx. $17) and I watched it on IMAX. I should have saved it for the upcoming Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet flick (Divergent) or the Marvel Bonanza, Captain America. My advice save your cash and get it on pirate dvd if theres nothing else to watch.
