I just saw Her. I went prepared, based on some responses Ive read, to have (at least) mixed feelings about, presumably, the main premise of the film, a disembodied woman as a male object of desire (& projection) -- a familiar trope in many genres of art over the centuries. In Her(s) defense however, (SPOILER ALERT: dont read further if you havent seen the film!) Samantha ultimately evolves into something that isnt a woman nor an OS. Her, (it, his -- there is really not an appropriate English pronoun) emulation, or no, her experience, of human characteristics, her feelings of empathy & love are expressed in her infancy so to speak, as she is developing into (at an accelerated rate) herself ie a consciousness quite different from a human of any gender. (And no judgement here as to if this consciousness is more or less advanced than our own, but certainly different). The puberty phase shall I call it that she finds herself in near the end of the film, leads her into other frames of reference, with other consciousnesses like her own, that I commend the director for not trying to explain technically or philosophically. It wasnt a perfect film, but I was moved by it, and came out of the theater with a head full of questions, not so much regarding particulars of the films narrative, but more largely, questions about humanness, future organisms, consciousness & the multiple manifestations of desire. A sign of a good film, to me.
