I just saw this great documentary about the Islamic State produced by Vice. They dont get too newsy. Its more of a profile about what life is like inside of the places IS controls. I really did learn a lot. One of the biggest things is that to most of the people in the Islamic State, their presence feels more like liberation than anything and they really do seem to have a positive impression of what the Islamic State is doing. This is because the area controlled by ISIS today spent the past several years being completely disenfranchised, and the rise of the Islamic State has given their lives relative stability. Im not trying to say (at all) that I think the Islamic State is a good group of guys (and by that, I mean men) and that they have noble ambitions, because I really dont think thats true (at all), but I did notice that their entire rise to power seems to be based on conflict with the west, as well as neighbors they see as aligned with the west. We cant really do anything about that besides change the way our country deals with people like this. If America didnt put itself up as a target for them to fight against, theyd crumble in a year. I say, lets stay out of it and let the emptiness of their ideas do them in, because that way something might actually change for real. Change from within. If we start fighting them, all were going to do is make them stronger.
