I just sent this email to the Minister of Education in The Netherlands: This message is for Jet Bussemaker, Minister of Education, Culture and Science. My name is Darla Sue Dollman, B.A., M.F.A. I am a journalist in the United States. I taught at Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado. I am also a member of a Facebook group called American History, a group of scholars, educators and others interested in American history. Today is D-Day, the day American soldiers and soldiers from many other countries landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of German-held countries, such as the Netherlands, where 75% of Jewish residents were murdered by the Germans. My uncle, Hubert Chesher, died at the Battle of the Bulge. I never met my uncle. My grandchildren are Jewish. Our familys involvement in liberating the people tortured by German soldiers is a very important part of our history. There is a man named Simon Voogt who lives in Belgium. He visits my uncles grave many times each year and places flowers on his grave, thanking him and other Americans for their sacrifice. There is a student at Leiden University College The Hague named Robin Vroom. Vroom and her fellow classmates decided it would be an interesting educational experiment to contact our American History group. She claimed to have found a letter from Benjamin Franklins son in her library. She contacted our group on numerous occasions. https://facebook/groups/418594928259229/560481507403903/?comment_id=572060832912637¬if_t=like Today, on D-Day, as we mourn the loss of our family members who died in the landing at Normandy Beach, Ms. Vroom and her students revealed it was a hoax and are now posting on the internet, mocking our patriotic citizens who trusted her and showed respect to her claims as no one believed that someone from a country that was nearly destroyed in World War II would possibly be so cruel and heartless as to mock the loss of our family members on such a day. https://facebook/robin.vroom.1?fref=nf And yet, they did. As you can see from her Facebook page where she and her friends are proudly posing with the letter and bragging about their educational experiment. The university is bragging about the educational experiment on the front page of their website: lucthehague.nl/news/franklin-hoax.html My question for you is this: Do you honestly teach your students that this is appropriate educational activity? It is an important question and many Americans are awaiting your answer.
