I just sent this open letter to The Independent for the attention of Lorde Dear Independent, my apologies I must address this to yourselves as an open letter as it is simply impossible to contact and hold to account our modern day celebrities it seems – unless one can bear to simplify the message to 140 characters which may never then be read by the intended recipient. So with your permission.. Dear Lorde Whilst I applaud you in speaking out against the Body Shaming attack by somebody calling themselves ‘Diplo’ I fear you have fallen victim to hypocrisy in this matter. Your tweet stated: @lordemusic: @diplo should we do something about your tiny penis while were at it hm Which seems to me to be a case of “an eye for an eye”, I’m sure you are well schooled enough to remember Mahatma Ghandi’s stance on this approach. Responding to one form of body shaming with a different form of body shaming is not a recipe for making the world a better place. You are also of course in a position of influence, and spreading the idea that it is ever reasonable to denigrate a man for his in-born attributes is quite reprehensible. Now, so that you don’t feel that I in anyway support the original issue (this so called ‘Diplo’s body shaming of a Ms Taylor Swift) you will be glad to know that I have also contacted Fundly expressing my dismay that they allowed such a piece to be published and requested that the ‘campaign’ be removed. I think in practical terms this is a much more useful response. I would urge you in future to consider how a wrong can be righted, rather than succumbing to anger and propagating hateful body shaming attitudes. I hope you can understand my intent here and will see fit to tweet some form of retraction regards using the term “tiny penis” as a form of insult. With my kindest regards Ant Smith
