I just spent a week in Iceland and was mesmerized the entire time I was there by the landscape. Most people agreed, that is like no other place on Earth and not only had they never seen another country quite like it, the feeling was more like being on another planet. Most of the country is covered in Lava fields and many of these are covered in soft mounds of moss. Mounds and mounds of moss and lichen as far as the eye can see. It really is quite spectacular and every-time I saw a field like that I wanted to lie down in it and pass the time staring at the stark contrast of the black lava, the green moss, the grey lichens and the ( almost always) misty, grey sky. I say almost because the sun would peek out on occasion and there was ( almost ) always a rainbow.... or two or three..... I have never seen so many rainbows in my LIFE! We even saw a rain CIRCLE which our guide had told us about and we all thought he was pulling our leg until we actually saw it ourselves! The plant life was abundant though much different than here. I saw growing in the wild; Angelica, alchemilla, heath and heather, bearberry, buttercups, dandelions and Hawkweed, wild geranium, tons and tons of blueberries and crow berries that we happily ate till we were full! We walked through several fields of Lupine, which must be amazing when they are in bloom! MUST GO BACK! MANY grasses, sedges and ferns and A low growing, shrub type birch, which was also used in the landscape as a windbreak for homes. There were succulents growing out of the lava, that I am hoping someone on my trip got a good picture of so I can identify them. I have fallen in love with this island Nation and will be back, if you get a chance.....GO!
