I just submitted my last paper and research grant proposal for my first semester as a PhD in Public Administration and International Affairs! We have had great teachers, classmates and mentors during this semester. Also have the opportunity to travel a lot and keep pushing some innitiatives forward to have better access to education in the field of Public Management in Latin America and specially in Costa Rica. Thank you very much to the new friends and extended family that supported us to finish our first semester in a very smooth and amazing process. Karla is killing it with great grades and also learning a lot. Here are some of the slides that I used to make the case for my research methods class to argue why Costa Rica is special (of course I added the exports diversification, trends, clusters, FDI, human capital etc!). And also my final analytical essay for the Intellectual History of Public Administration class, that I started with a poem that the professor gave us (who I converted in to a song afterwards and play it for my classmates). Our PhD composition is 5 students of Public Administration and we share classes with PhDs in Political Science and PhDs in Social Policy from South Korea, India, US, Brazil etc. Our professor for this class was one of the proteges and PhD students of Elinor Ostrom, Nobel Prize in Economics. The one-on-one sessions with the professor and classmates, the discussions and analytical essays were sometimes borderline artistic, like a Pink Floyd concert but with strings. We talk in some lectures about the Costa Rica economic model and compare it with other countries and regions. For my research methods class; I designed an experiment to better understand the public opion of infraestructure PPPs in Costa Rica and secure some funding for it--it is moving forward. We also saw a lecture by Dr. Francis Fukyama and met him in a hall before diinner. The motto is simple: Love what you do and do what you love. Do it with joy. Have fun and be grateful. PS--FACT--> After INCAE MBA everything is downward slope and smooth, there is nothing as challenging and rewarding as a Montecalo Financial Simulation class with Dr. Carlos Quintanilla (JEDI MASTER!). I am actually spending even more time with Valentina. Here is part of the poem by Mathew Arnold: Ah, love, let us be true To one another! for the world, which seems To lie before us like a land of dreams, So various, so beautiful, so new, Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light, Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; And we are here as on a darkling plain Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, Where ignorant armies clash by night.
