I just submitted this letter to the editor of the TriCity Herald. Id like to encourage activism in others! Speak up, not just in FB, please. John Boehner cares little for civil rights, as exemplified by his opposition to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Spokesman Michael Steel said “The Speaker believes this legislation will increase frivolous litigation and cost American jobs, especially small business jobs.” That excuse also applies equally well to legislated protections already in place for women and racial minorities. Today’s Republican leadership believes non-discrimination is bad for businesses, who just happen to be their major campaign contributors. What a disgusting abrogation of the principle of equality. Slavery was bad for business too, eh? ENDA extends to all states, what is already true in 21. ENDA is no daring experiment. It is barely even ‘justice’, as it exempts their beloved churches (read: a big constituency) from this fair labor practice. Republican voters have elected straight-up bigots. Please, let them find better in their midst, if there are any. Support the civil rights most of us enjoy, by applying them on behalf of our LGBT family members. Doc Hastings has a role to play here, in the House. Please ask him to support civil rights, as I have.
