I just wanted to repost some comments a dear friend and sister, made on her page. I find them extremely illuminating and remember the whole A.I.D.S and ALS debacle where millions and millions of dollars were raised but 80-90% went to the overhead costs of the charities which included the executives salaries and vacation costs. If we actually solved the problems humanity faces, we would have have to do away with charity, philanthropy, hierarchy and the like. Then who could we feel superior to? Helping others is not always help nor altruistic. There are over 86,000 registered charities with Canada helps alone. There are many. many more non profits. Working for a non profit is becoming one of the largest suppliers of our jobs. Every fund raising event brings about yet more business...catered dinners at convention centres, plane tickets to bring delegates to conferences, pub nights, golf tournaments, theatre and sporting events, honorariums for speakers, public relations materials, web site support, transportation costs...the list goes on so that the incentive to eliminate the cause of the wrong or disease is in conflict with our need to make a living and other issues we humans need to address.. - Marianne Van der Wel :)
