I just wanted to share a post-DAVE school experience Ive had in a town thats not Los Angeles or Vancouver and talk about the importance of networking. The film below is a submission to the 48 Hour Film competition for Charlotte, NC. I have been in Charlotte for a few months now and in that time I have been networking and getting to know people in the film community here. Through a meetup group I met the filmmakers of this short film. The competition was coming up and on a whim we decided to work together. None of us had previously worked together before and I had just met these people. We had 48 hours to come up with a script that fit the parameters, film it, and edit it. The filmmakers I worked with went at this with storyboards, lights, dollies, make-up artists, actors, production assistants, etc. We filmed in one day. As we were filming the editor, Melissa, was upstairs putting it together. I was also an extra in the film because why not. I did a VFX shot at the end involving a car and headlights, and also a simple particle effect. My shots look horrible because I had a very short amount of time to work on them. We were cramped up in an editing room and stayed up all weekend. None of us were being paid. None of that matters, however, because what does matter are the connections Ive made from working on this short film. There was a screening and red carpet award ceremony with hundreds of people where I got to do even more networking and connecting. The film won audience choice award and critics runner up choice. The group of us have really bonded well and become friends and continue to meet to discuss new ideas as well as just to hang out. Many people have reached out to me who are interested in having VFX in their films. This week I am speaking at a local colleges film class about VFX and networking. I am also speaking at the film community meetup group in December. You never know what opportunities are out there. Many of those opportunities you have to make for yourself. That involves getting out there and letting people know what you can do by marketing yourself. Im not claiming to have made it but what Im trying to say is that DAVE School taught us a very specific set of skills that are very marketable in areas outside of LA; if you are willing to put yourself out there.
