I just wanted to share with you how to fix a broken floppy disc drive. 1/ Firstly clean disc drive of dust and dirt. 2/Then clean the heads with methylated spirit or thick dose of washing up Liquid using a cotton bud. 3/Demagnetize the heads by putting the Demagnetizer on the head and slowly pulling away. 4/Check switch operation. Put a floppy disc in and see if the switch works via a multi-meter. If it works go to next step. If not then you need to clean or replace switch. 5/Check for dry solder joints 6/Put case back on and test disc drive. If it works job done!! If not follow this; 7/Does motor spin? If yes then must be a head problem. Most likely badly worn heads or out of alignment. If thats the case alter the two screws that hold the heads in place as might be out of alignment. Now the proper way to realign a head is with a special disc and oscilloscope, expensive tools. So as an alternative use xcopy. Align the heads until the disc drive loads up a disc. Put xcopy in and copy a disc upto 79 tracks and write it back on another disc. Put this copied disc in a trust worthy amiga drive and see if it loads up. Then load xcopy on the trust worthy amiga and copy the copied disc onto another disc. Now insert this disk back into old amiga with newly aligned heads. If this works then your heads are aligned good enough. 8/If the head alignment doesnt work it must be a dead motor or controller issue. Sadly not easy to repair. Some would just buy a new disc drive purely for the less hassle factor. However if you have some faulty ones and havent got the money to get a new one try my method. Thanks for reading.
