I just wanted to update the alumni of some important things that have been happening lately. After a few years of trying to find a director to take over the band and years keeping the instruments and music safe, we decided that it was in our best interest to dissolve the band and to distribute these items according to the by-laws of the band. The instruments were being held in two locations. The owner of Udder Cream in Salem, Ohio generously donated valuable space for us to store most of the larger pieces. The alumni rented a dry and heated space in Austintown which held the music, uniforms and the smaller instruments along with various other items. The cost was over $2000 per year. The uniforms were donated to the Youngstown Playhouse last fall. Most of the remaining clothing items were donated to Goodwill. In April, a letter was sent to 50 local high schools stating that we would be giving the instruments away on May 3rd. Over 35 schools attended the auction! The following Saturday, we lent Austintown Fitch the music. After it has been sorted and documented, as per our agreement, a letter will be sent to local area schools that this music is available to be loaned out. In January, after being on the market for many years, a buyer came forward to purchase the land located in Liberty Township. We gladly accepted the offer. After selling the land, it was decided that we, along with Squire’s family, would start a scholarship at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music in Squire’s name. This scholarship is initially being funded with over $70,000! We have worked with the Youngstown State University Foundation and the Dana School of Music and we are pleased to announce that on Friday, September 19, a formal dedication of the scholarship will take place at 11am in the auditorium at Dana. We encourage all alumni to attend. We are also looking at writing a history of the band to be published by Arcadia Publishing sometime later this year. If anyone has any historical pictures that they think should be included, please let me know.
