I just watched Begotten, a mesmerizing, butt-clenching, exhausting film. It wore me out and wore me down. Ostensibly about death and rebirth, it struck as much as portraying the evils of organized power and religion as they relate to the human condition. With a nerve-grating score and grainy black and white imagery designed (I assume) to recall the old film footage of the Holocaust, even the scenes of rebirth at the end seemed an obscenity. I can easily imagine a physical Hell like this; a hell in which bodily pain quickly becomes secondary to the repetitive and redundant nature of the actions causing that pain. I give it two battered thumbs up.
