I just watched “FedUp”, a great movie recommendation from my friend Zip. It documents how just about all processed food produced for us to eat is laced with processed sugar. That sugar is what makes us fat, leading to diabetes and other diseases. Sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine, so that’s why we crave it and its hard for us to stop eating junk food. Corporations buy the government with money and lobbyist to fund studies and create policies they profit from. Fast food companies feed school children, so basically kids grow up addicted to sugar drinks, pizza, cheeseburger and nachos. They even tie it in with toys and children’s programming on TV. It’s sad, as kids don’t have a reference to what healthy food is, or how it affects them. One kid was trying to pack his own “healthy” lunch option from home with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white break with a juice drink….that’s all sugar. In 1980 the number of documented type two diabetes cases amongst American adolescents (ages 8-19) was zero. Whereas, in 2010, there were 57,638 U.S. adolescents diagnosed with this preventable, life-threatening disease: type two diabetes. The cards are stacked against us. Between 1970 and 1990, the consumption of high fructose corn syrup in America has increased by 1000 percent. By 2010, two out of every three Americans were either overweight or obese. Eighty percent, or 480,000 of the 600,000 food products sold within the U.S. have added sugar, which, according to researchers and medical doctors, is why we have the worlds highest obesity rate at 31 percent. Countries that American food companies export to are showing the similar trends. The fitness mantra is to exercise more and eat less calories, but that’s misleading too. Just about all experienced physical fitness trainers and competitors advise that nutrition affects 70-80% of your body composition and appearance. Between 1980 and 2000, fitness club memberships doubled in America, but so did the obesity rates. It’s not just how much we exercise, but nourishing clean food make most of the difference. Personally, I’ve been getting fat again. I’ve been binging for quite some time on processed food and sweets from free endless food on job sites, to various vacations and holidays….I thought it was just a little at a time, what could it hurt, right? Before my fitness journey began a couple of years ago, I was about 230lbs, with fat bulging over the waist of my jeans. After making a commitment to consistent exercise and healthy eating that avoided processed food and sugar, I dropped to 180lbs. Since I started eating junk food again, I’m now up to 226lb and I can see the fat in my cheeks and my belly rounding out of my shirts. Being mostly consistent with exercise has helped build some muscle, but I can tell my poor eating habits have been making me fatter. The “FedUp movie is really insightful, and a good reminder for me that sugar processed food and sugar is everywhere. I have to make a conscious effort to choose drinking pure water and eating real nutritional food to maintain my health, fitness and wellbeing. Corporations are out to make money, even if it costs our health. We can only rely on ourselves to be aware and to look out for our health and the health of our loved ones. https://youtube/watch?v=aCUbvOwwfWM
