I just watched The Taking of Deborah Logan and, while Im glad I sat through it all, Im not sure I want to watch it again any time soon. THe story is a faux-documentary that looks into the life of a woman going through the stages of Alzheimers that as it progresses, starts to get decidedly more sinister and dark. The first ten minutes had me seriously thinking about turning it off as it very much reminded me of my own situation with my mother, a stubborn, very private character in her own right, having to deal with her mind and body losing control of itself. I wasnt sure I could take all that right now. But, I stuck with it. The good stuff happens in the details. The cast is uniformly good to great. The woman playing Deborah goes through a lot of serious emotional and physical changes that really reminded me of Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream and she handles all of it amazingly. The young documentary cast and Deborahs daughter, Sarah, are really good as well. Its really nice to see a diverse cast, there being an Asian woman, a black cameraman, and white guy for the team, plus an East-Asian woman as Deborahs doctor. The issues regarding care for the elderly, bottled up family secrets and emotions, mothers and their hopes and dreams for their children, are all handled really well. The bad really happens in the very last twenty minutes of the movie and its not so much bad as it is mostly predictable. This is kind of in the realm of found footage films so that last bit crams all the cliches of that sub-genre into it, including the stupid things people do to keep the camera running and trained on the action. That said, I was a bit surprised at the climax of the film, which I didnt quite see coming. Very well paced, written and directed film with a wonderful cast and some genuine thrills, if not full on scares. This is one of those films where the real life parts are the scariest parts Its on Netflix Streaming now if youre interested. youtu.be/JiODgrdAJvo
