I just watched a most magical little vignette of wren behavior, one that even as a close observer, Ive never seen before. I didnt have a camera ready, but I was actually kind glad cuz sometimes that is the best way to really be present to the moment, to simply stand still, breath slowly and be amazed. Picture it in your imagination if you will. A busy little Bewicks Wren works its way through the maze of branches on a climbing rose that Id just sprayed with the hose a few minutes before to knock off a bunch of aphids. As she flits and grabs bugs on her right and her left, she very deliberately taps the leaves above and beside her with the crown of her head to knock the water drops off, bathing in them, fluffing her feathers and rubbing up against leaf and stem to get the maximum effect from each new collection of drops. Occasionally she pauses to preen her feathers then heads back into the greenery to knock more droplets onto herself and bathe some more, collecting her dinner all the while. Talk about efficiency. Such a charming little bird, and such an efficient little partner in pest control within the garden. And wrens both chat with you, if you chat with them, and sing beautiful songs. Why, oh why do people put poisons on their plants that will be ingested by these little wonders when the birds themselves are so perfectly suited to the task?
