I just watched a video of someone explaining cutting and bulking - TopicsExpress

I just watched a video of someone explaining cutting and bulking for powerlifting.... I havent really been paying attention to youtube because 99% of the info on there is presented by under qualified, under experienced people. Well, this one wasnt too different. This video advocated that 15% bodyfat is the upper limit for performance (a number completely pulled out of thin air), advocated 5% drops in bodyweight when cutting (with no mention of what that does to your leverages or fluid balance) and specifically mentioned not talking about supplements because they are illegal. There sure were plenty of plugs for online training, websites to visit, gaining muscle quickly, blah, blah, word vomit. Ok. Here is how nutrition works for powerlifting. Step one is realizing that it will take most people DECADES to get to the correct weight class/bodyweight. Not a couple 10 week cookie cutter excel sheet cutting and bulking cycles. Step two is not giving a shit what your bodyfat percentage is. I am not saying turn yourself into a land monster (although your total will be better) or sacrifice your overall health, but the only number that matters is the pounds on your back and in your hands. Most competitors, especially in their first couple years of competing, have absolutely no reason whatsoever to cut weight. The only reasons to do so are to: qualify for a bigger competition or set a new record. If neither of those things are a concern or realistic, then dont add the stress of dropping a weight class just because some asshole on a youtube video told you that its important. Its not. If the difference is last place in a heavier weight class compared to second to last place in a lighter one, you probably need all the calories and training time you can get anyway. Ok, rant over. I need to stop before I flip my desk over and start eating it.
