I just watched an extraordinary feature film. It isnt NCNCNB; its budget is about $3 million, and it stars Ryan Reynolds. But its a film that any filmmaker who is interested in minimalist techniques can learn from. There is only one onscreen actor. The setting is only one location--the interior of a coffin. No shots are repeated. It demonstrates how daunting acting, lighting, and camera problems can be solved by winning the faith and willing belief of the audience. Films dont get much more minimalist than this and still work. I consider it a creative triumph for the actor, the DP, the writer, and the director. There were so many ways to go wrong.
