I just watched some old film footage of The Beatles performing live. Black and white, mono – tell tale signs of 60s-era state of the art tech, but with all the emotional connection that goes with it. It does strange things to my heart, this music, so pure, so direct. Its just love songs after all, deftly crafted pop music designed by young people for young people, in – and out – of love. And yet, its so much more, at least to those of us who were also new to this world when we first heard it. Its as if when we are that young – and still forming – music settles into the holes not yet closed, and stays there forever, with no way to get out. Our nerve endings grow around it like the roots of a tree, never to let go. And when I am 90, if I am still breathing, I will see this old footage of these young lads now long gone, and it will start again inside me, this strange tangle of emotion. And like today, I wont know whether to laugh or cry, but I will feel, and Ill be grateful for the life long experience of being, and the music that accompanies me on the way.
