I just watched this movie. And you need to watch it too. Its f#$king BRILLIANT! This is a Takashi Shimizu film by proxy if not by reality. He was the producer, but the visuals and the story might as well have been his too. That does mean it has its problems, but those problems stem from overreaching until things fall apart. The movie has a GORGEOUS aesthetic (Shimizu, duh!) and has so many lovely details that reward the patient and careful viewer (Shimizu, duh!), and is such a fascinating exploration of Chinese magic. But all of this is couched in a very human drama about loss and living with the terrible things that happen around us. We can embrace it, or we can let it consume and destroy us. Of course, then we get to the third act and things start to get overstuffed and confusing (Shimizu, duh!). Asian horror fans, unite! We need more Chinese horror! And this film is proof.
