I just went to see 12 Years a Slave, a movie that is in limited theaters but ought to be everywhere. Its a true story, based on a book of the same name written by a successful, talented northern black man who was kidnapped in the 1840s and sold into slavery in Georgia. Its an awful story about mans inhumanity to man, but also about the courage and faith that kept black slaves alive during what were sometimes the worst of conditions, and about the hope brought to them by the whites willing to risk their own lives to try to help them. It is shockingly real, and I believe it should be seen by everyone over age 15 or so. Its rated R, but mainly for violence -- the real kind that sadly happens in our world in too many places still today.
