I just wrote a dear friend about Ferguson and the voices on both - TopicsExpress

I just wrote a dear friend about Ferguson and the voices on both sides that appear to be 1) selecting facts and interpretations that support what they already believe and 2) failing to grant any perspective that undermines their own case. The propensity of each side is to dictate what the other side must change. The biblical model would be for each side to repent...admit its own failings, even things such as pride or uncaring for the other. One of the wonders of Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. was that their compassion always extended to those who were their enemies in the struggle because these moral leaders saw that all involved -- as agents of oppression or victims of an immoral status quo -- were casualties of that immorality. At some point we need to move and are starting to move beyond Michael Brown and Darrell Wilson to the entrenched issues that have victimized both -- albeit it in very disproportionate ways. These are huge issues for America, and there is a reason we havent tackled them better to this date...they are really entrenched. While race and fear are a big part of it, I think the more underlying problem is poverty and whether we can continue to have some live as if their lives are not effected by the struggles of others in their larger community -- not just their neighborhood or zip code.
