I keep seeing these atrocious memes floating around the net saying that liberals are calling America evil because we did a little waterboarding to a couple of terrorist after the 911 attacks and subsequent beheadings and yada yada yada. This kind of yellow-bellied inflammatory rhetoric bothers me on so many levels. First...often times these people spreading these memes are the very people who say Americans are exceptional. We do have many examples of American exceptionalism, but TORTURE ISNT one of them. What is exceptional about America is that she is a country of laws, a bill of rights, due process, Habeus Corpus, and (at least at one time), a reputation for trying to be better than mindless eye for an eye marauding pin heads. Dont pat yourself on the back with the captives hand you just cut off and claim the high ground. When I grew up in the 60s my government talked about trying to elevate ourselves to be better people. So did my church. What happened? Second... the Fox pundits and others make it sound like its just some fun with water, not really torture. We prosecuted the Japanese for doing this to our servicemen. It is horrific and it wasnt the only means used. One prisoner died. 29 were tortured that were subsequently found to be innocent of any crimes. I would not want any part of it happening to me and those pussies calling it harmless: Sean Hannity and Bill OReilly would cry like babies before it even got started, and so would that draft dodger Dick Cheney. How can a society be exceptional if there is no metric to measure it by and no deed too horrific. I see Obama trashed by Faux News all the time and nobody is telling them they are calling America evil. Clearly they are implying that individuals and groups in this country can do wrong if they are trying to flay Hillary, all the Obamas, Biden, Reid, Pelosi etal... So clearly these Americans who did cross the line should be accountable and as a nation we should learn from this experience. Being exceptional takes diligence, work, and reflection. I think the goal is worth it. If I pay taxes, go about my day and avert my eyes from events that belittle me and my country, then I am neither a good citizen to my country, nor a fitting role model to my children and would be ashamed to call myself a good enough man for my exceptional bride Tanya Conover Walling. We can do better.
