I knew having a child, becoming a mother, would be a great spiritual teacher but I had no idea to what extent the practice would be. Everyday is like a meditation - a meditation that takes immense presence, that demands being in the moment, that requires compassion and patience, that brings you face to face with your truth, your shadow, your strengths and your weaknesses. At nearly nine months, it is the longest retreat Ive been on ( not such a silent one ;) ). At times I feel in such a natural flow and rhythm with myself, with my daughter, with life. And in other times it feels like Im climbing Mount Everist with inadequate gear. It has shown me how much love we can hold, how much kindness we can embody and how much compassion is needed when we meet our own limits. Parenting is the ultimate spiritual practice. One that is not always sugar-coated and glossed over like the cover of magazines. Sometimes its messy. Sometimes its exhausting. Sometimes you want to just abandon ship and find a peaceful oasis in the midst of the storm. It is all these things and of course the bliss, the magic, the pure and abundant overflow of love that pours between these little beings and ourself. But as in anything in life, the more honest we are in ALL moments - not just the pretty ones - the richer the entire tapestry becomes. I wish I could encourage all mamas to feel safe enough to share their truth. To not feel alone. To know that there are so many mamas out there having the same exact experience as you are. I feel blessed to have some amazing women and fellow mamas in my life where I can share my joys and my struggles without shame, without judgment, knowing that my experience will be met with love, empathy and understanding. We need more of this in our lives. A return of Sisterhood that can truly support, nourish and encourage the expression of being a mother, a woman, in this most incredible and immense journey of raising a human being.
